How do you pronounce Moroccan Arabic?

Short answer
Darija uses several sounds not found in English — such as a deep 'ḥ', the throaty 'ʿ' (ain) and 'kh' — and often drops short vowels, which creates consonant clusters. Practising with a native teacher is the fastest way to get them right.
Sounds to practise
- kh — like Scottish 'loch'
- gh — a soft gargled 'r'
- ḥ — a breathy h from the throat
- ʿ (ain) — a tightening in the throat
- q — a k made further back
Why vowels disappear
Darija often shortens words compared with MSA, so learners hear strings of consonants. Listening a lot and repeating slowly helps.
